INFORMATION ABOUT THE ARTIST

The German sculptor couple Wolfgang Kubach and Anna Maria Kubach-Wilmsen studied painting and sculpture at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts (1959 to 1965).

From 1976 onward, they created the so-called „stone books“ as their artistic concept and consistently developed it further. Anna Kubach-Wilmsen summarized their artistic intention of the stone books as the „contents“ of the stone in one sentence: „A book is held by the hand and read with the eyes. A stone book is held by the eyes and read with the hand.“

Their work encompasses stone books of all sizes. There is a scroll and so-called „thrown books“ that landed roughly like Icarus, and even a large book ruin. Large stone newspapers, individual stone sheets, and stone tablets were created under the title „Support des rêves“ (Support of Dreams) – these are collapsed stacks of paper.

A major work can be found in the National Library of France (BnF) in Paris: the so-called Great Stone Library comprises 316 stone books, created in 1983.

The granite library La Storia della Terra, first presented in 1992 at the Villa Massimo in Rome, is considered their masterpiece: it consists of large stone book towers crafted from over 50 different types of marble and granite. The material originates from five continents.

Works by the sculptor couple can be found in renowned museum collections worldwide.

The complete artistic oeuvre of the sculptors Kubach-Wilmsen emerged as a 40-year homage to the material of stone. In their hands, materials from the earth, millions of years old, were reinvented.

Anna Kubach-Wilmsen and Wolfgang Kubach created numerous large-scale sculptures in marble and granite.

Awards

In 2014, the Kubach-Wilmsen team received the Ike and Berthold Roland Foundation Art Prize.
In 2017, Anna Kubach-Wilmsen received the Max Slevogt Medal.
