ARTIST INFO
Gerhard Richter has held first place in the ranking of contemporary artists for decades.
Probably the most famous quote from the professor of painting: “Good pictures are also incomprehensible! His high demands on a work of art always challenged the unthinkable.
His path into art started as a company and theater painter, until he began his studies at the Dresden Academy of Art at the age of just 19. Before the wall was built, the artist managed to escape “GDR realism” in time.
He began a student life at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Here, for example, Ferdinand Macketanz and Karl Otto Götz taught him. Sigmar Polke studied with Gerhard Richter in Götz’s class. Gerhard Richter worked as an art teacher until the end of the 1960s, was a guest lecturer at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts in 1967 and since 1971 has been a professor of painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy (1971-1993).
His birthday exhibition in the Albertinum of the Dresden State Art Collection from February to May 2022 was personally curated by Gerhard Richter. Many of the exhibits came from Gerhard Richter’s art foundation, so there are landscapes and portraits next to family pictures that mean something to him.
The painter has recently become a draftsman who still has a lot to say artistically. The artist Gerhard Richter himself appreciates the directness of his artistic statements on paper.
The Gerhard Richter Archive is located in Dresden.Gerhard Richter lives and works in Cologne.
