Richard Estes’s work templates are real buildings and artefacts of our time
The American artist Richard Estes is a graduate of the Classical Academy in Chicago. As early as the 1950s in New York, Estes began developing his highly detailed, trompe-l’œil style of painting. He further refined the realism of artists like Edward Hopper and Edgar Degas. As a graphic designer for an advertising agency, Richard Estes’s clean drawings and illustrations were in high demand. When Estes left the United States in 1962 to settle in Spain, his photorealistic artworks were increasingly sought after by international collectors. Just four years later, Estes was able to live off his art! He quickly rose to become one of the most sought-after artists of our time.
The artist Richard Estes continues to develop his keen eye for detail.
Estes creates a unique hyperrealism from a detail-oriented photorealism
Streets, cities, and above all, reflections, characterize his artworks of the 1970s and 80s. The photorealism of his works belies the fact that Richard Estes freely invents and constructs his cityscapes and reflections. Everything has been seen before, captured photographically here and there, recorded in meticulous detail, and yet it is fiction! With the eye of a photographer and his knowledge of photomontage, his canvases become, as it were, painted reportage experiences.
In 1972, Richard Estes participated in the „Realism“ section of documenta 5 in Kassel, sharpening visitors‘ appreciation for hyperrealistic artworks.
Reality Influences Richard Estes‘ Hyperrealistic Compositions
Although houses, streets, or squares can be identified here and there in Richard Estes’s artworks, the imagery is freely deconstructed and reconstructed. His cityscapes are so highly condensed that the viewer perceives a real world, a freely composed reality that suggests reality in every reflection of light.
Richard Estes’s source material consists of real buildings and artifacts of our time.
He repeatedly incorporates so-called „iconic“ motifs, such as internationally renowned landmarks or landscapes, into his compositions. However, with unusual perspectives or seemingly random reflections, Estes creates new visual worlds that captivate the viewer and invite exploration. Here and there, one sees fragments of buildings from New York, especially Manhattan, or—since the 1990s—from the American East Coast.
Richard Estes‘ artworks have become „icons“ of art.
Internationally, collectors and art lovers find their own viewing habits reinterpreted in Richard Estes’s paintings and translated into a visual language that is absolutely contemporary and can be rediscovered again and again.
