Sean Scully was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1945 and is regarded as one of the leading figures of contemporary abstract painting. As a painter, printmaker, and photographer, he has developed a distinctive visual language characterized by richly colored bands, geometric forms, and remarkable emotional depth.
After studying at Croydon College of Art and Newcastle University, Scully moved to the United States in the early 1970s. There he developed his signature style, combining Minimalism and abstraction with a deeply expressive painterly approach.
