Stephan Balkenhol was born in Fritzlar, Germany, in 1957 and is considered one of the most important contemporary German sculptors. From 1976 to 1982, he studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Hamburg under Ulrich Rückriem. Since the 1980s, Balkenhol has developed a distinctive figurative language characterized by simplicity, clarity, and a profound exploration of the human figure.
He is best known for his carved wooden sculptures of human figures, often standing alone on pedestals and marked by a quiet, understated presence. His works exist between everyday reality and symbolism, allowing viewers space for personal interpretation.
